A VINTAGE FEEL

Hayley
On a beautiful summers day in Lake Highlands Tx, I wanted to photograph a subject in a field of flowers capturing the spirit of who they are as a person. So much of shooting is getting people to be perfect, with the best smile, hair, etc. I wanted to shoot someone capturing their personality. I asked a model I know who loved to read to meet me at Whiterock Lake in Dallas. There is a beautiful field of flowers that I’ve been wanting to shoot. I asked her to bring her favorite book and meet me in the morning before it got too hot. I wanted to get some great headshots with the 70-200mm lens wide open (f2.8) to blur out the background to make her stand out. . Actually I had a bunch of things I wanted to accomplish on this shoot. One: I wanted to shoot her in this field with her book. Two, I wanted to use the 70-200mm lens wide open. Three, I wanted to pull back and get the subject sitting and standing with full body shots. Four, I wanted to use photoshop presets from www.florabellacollection.com. I have hardly used them before. Once we decided on a spot, I broke out my Canon 5D Mark2 and 60D. The 5D I used with a 24-70mm lens for the wide shots and the 60D had the 70-200mm lens for the headshot. I wanted to take a few of her reading, but I mainly wanted to use the book in other ways. She has beautiful blue eyes that eye wanted to capture. Her looking over the book accomplished two things. It showed her best asset and her love of reading. www.lakesidepics.com

Our Little Orphan Annie

Annie
Another family member that some people overlook is their 4 legged children.
Annie, our family Shih Tzu, made a great model for me. I wanted to catch her with a proud look since she is the princess of the house, at least that is what she thinks. I got down low on the ground and shot up at her giving her a heroic stance. I was shooting with my Canon 5D Mark11 with a 50mm lens wide open at f2.8, 1/200 sec and ISO 300. I am enjoying shooting with 50mm lens for the connection with the subject. You have to get very close so the background can become blurred. Okay …sometimes it might make you very close. At least the subject can hear you when you are asking them to do something. With my 70-200mm lens I am so far back that I have to almost scream for them to hear me because I am 15 feet away! Not a good option when your subject might not want to “stay”.I also wanted to use some creative lightroom adjustments just to have some fun. Luckily, Annie is not going to complain that a color is wrong or a hair is not in place. Another perk when working with a pet. Take a look and leave me a comment. Thanks! Lakesidepics.com

A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Some times I feel like I get stuck. My creativity doesn’t flow as much as I would like. That is when I usually sign up for a class. Even the most experienced photographers need some inspiration and knowledge from other people now and then! The training class was at Spot Light Studio in Dallas Tx. The teacher was Margie Woods. I chose the class because of her work with natural light. There was every type of photographer there from hobbyist to business owner. Those always end up being the best classes to take because you can learn something from everyone. We started out in the morning talking about how best we can use our cameras with natural light. She also went over some of the images she had shot. She explained the in’s and out of each shot going over camera settings and position of the subject in the light. Next we set out to Deep Elm just east of Downtown Dallas to meet our models and get some hands on training on how she shoots. She went through her shooting techniques with each model explaining everything while we sat back and watched her work. WOW! It’s so interesting to see someone else’s perspective on shooting. After about 45 minutes, it was our turn. I shot with the Canon 5D Mark2 with the 70-200mm lens. After talking to the instructor, we decided this was the best way to go and shot with it all day. We had several different models ranging from toddlers to teenagers to moms. I had such a great experience shooting and learning from the other photographer’s techniques . The models were such pros! They would move and smile on demand. A gift for someone who is there to get their creativity flowing. The kids were so cute too. it was a good challenge to try and catch a moment with them and their moms since they really just wanted to run and play. I was in my element shooting on the move trying to capture everything I could while keeping the camera in focus. I think I shot around 300 pictures in 2 hours! At the end of the shoot we gave our memory cards to Margie and she took them back to the studio to go over them with her trained eye. We all did a great job and we discussed what we did right and what we could have done better on each picture. At the end we made a slideshow with all of our images. I was really happy with what I had done and the class overall was inspiring.
I want to thank my wife and kids for letting me take this class. It was on a Sunday and that is the only day we have together as a family. Here are some of the images. Feel free to leave me a comment and tell me what you think. too see more Lakesidepics.com

Lightroom and Creativity

I got some new Lightroom presets that I wanted to try out on a person. After I got the camera ready and found a model, I went to the back yard we live in Lake Highlands Tx. When I say model in this story, I mean my daughter who gets tired of me shooting her sometimes, but she is the closet person I can find. Also, I don’t have to pay her which is a win for me! We set out to the back yard for a quick photo session, about 15 minutes.

I was shooting with my Canon 60D at 1/125, f2.8 and 250 ISO. She was in the shade and I wanted to blow out the background. I had her sit down on the ground and do some simple poses. I had her do a shoulder turn while looking back at me and trying some hands though the hair (she needed to brush it anyway!). I got about 15 shots in when I had to stop. The lightroom presets I wanted to tryout are a little different. Sometimes people are cautious about these settings, but they are great when you want to do something creative. Two of the photos I used a blue green gradient overlay and some simple editing. The other, I used a purple overlay (my favorite). I have a before and after of one of them so you can see the difference. There is no need to be scared to use the presets when wanting to do something creative and inspired. Let me know what you think!

Studio Time with the Kids

I took the Kids to the studio to do some fun shots and a couple of headshots. I wanted to see what I could do in 1 hour with kids that really are tired on me taking photos of them. I  wanted to shoot with a 50mm fixed lens that I had never used before, I know that is hard to comprehend because most photographers start out only using the 50mm. I had so much fun shooting with it I had a little trouble getting the focus right that just because I was shooting at f2.8 trying to just focus on the eyes. I also wanted to use the amazing chair that was there and see what kind of shots I could get with the kids using it as a prop. I did under expose most of the pictures because I was working with the kids to get their personality to come out and it was late afternoon in the studio and I just wanted to use natural light. Still we had fun and I learned a lot. Take a look and tell me what you think.
